Niger military sources announced Sunday the Nigeria-based Boko Haram militants had captured the Caramaga island, southwest of the capital city of Niamey, Al Bawaba News reported. Hundreds of Boko Haram militants assailed the strategic island, located on the Chad Lake, Saturday morning, killing many security personnel, according to Niger official sources. The sources added the extremist group attacked the same island last February, leaving seven Niger army personnel killed."Niger troops have launched counter-attack to recapture the island," Al-Bawaba cited the sources as saying.
