U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Samanatha Power announced Tuesday that the U.S. will provide $507 million of life-saving aid to those affected by the war in Syria. "Countries must close the widening gap between what we are providing and what the Syrian people desperately need. That is why President Obama sent me here today to announce that the United States is pledging $507 million," Power said in her remarks at the 3rd International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria in Kuwait. Power added that the new funding is the largest announcement of funding the United States has made for the Syrian humanitarian crisis bringing the total U.S. contribution to nearly $3.7 billion since the conflict began in 2011. The funding will provide food, water, medical care, shelter, protection, and other necessities to millions of civilians suffering inside Syria and nearly 4 million Syrian refugees in the region. Meanwhile, the UN humanitarian appeal for Syria this year is expected to reach $8.4 billion, the largest in history, and $3.4 billion more than the appeal of 2014.
