The Kurdish People's Protection Units known as ‘YPG' launched a major offensive against the Islamic State's positions in northeast Syria capturing 70 villages from the group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Wednesday. The Syrian monitoring group added that at least 132 IS militants were killed and dozens injured amid severe clashes between the militant group and YPG fighters since Saturday. The Kurdish militia backed by US-led air strikes managed to drive IS militants from the Syrian Kobani last month, SOHR reported. The northeastern corner of Syria is strategically important in the battle against IS because it borders the territory controlled by the group in Iraq.
