The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has urged the United Nations, (UN), Security Council to adopt a new resolution condemning the Houthi takeover of power in neighboring Yemen, according to Erem News Friday. The GCC urged the UN to implement strict measures against the Houthi power grab and to restore the legitimate government of outgoing president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. The draft resolution also stipulates that the Security Council should implement additional measures in the event that the Houthis reject the Council's resolution after its approval. The organization's six member states strongly condemned what they described as a "coup" by the Houthi rebels against Hadi's legitimate government and asked the UN to force the rebels to withdraw from state institutions in the Capital and other provinces. "This Houthi coup is a dangerous and unacceptable escalation which we reject. It totally contradicts the spirit of pluralism and coexistence which Yemen has known," the GCC said in a statement reported by the state-owned Kuwait News Agency (KUNA). The Houthi movement ousted Hadi last month and announced a controversial "constitutional declaration" last week that dissolved the parliament.
