The young rule

By day six, young Egyptian athletes were dominating the 10-day 2018 African Youth Games in Algeria. Up to then, Egypt was leading the medals standings of the third edition of the Games with a total of 98 medals: 58 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze medals. The boys had claimed 35 gold, 10 silver and eight bronze while the girls collected 21 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze. The mixed teams won two gold and one silver.

Hosts Algeria was in second place with 90 medals — 23 gold, 30 silver and 37 bronze medals, while Nigeria followed in third with 37 medals which included 13 gold, nine silver and 15 bronze medals.
Egypt is taking part in the Games with a total of 269 male and female athletes competing in 27 of the 30 listed disciplines.

Algeria is hosting the Games from 18 to 28 July which sees the participation of some 3,000 athletes from 54 nations. Algiers was awarded the Games by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa in 2014.
The 30-sport program includes athletics, archery, badminton, 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, fencing, equestrian, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, karate, rowing, rugby, swimming, sailing, boules, tennis, table tennis, shooting, triathlon, taekwondo, volleyball, wushu and weightlifting, judo and golf.
The competition in some of these sports will also serve as qualification for the 2018 Olympic Youth Games scheduled to take place in October in Argentina.
