Classics in Egypt: Porsche 924
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 04 - 05 - 2017

There are times when a really rare car is found in Egypt, especially one in showroom condition inside out. This model by the German manufacturer is iconic. The Porsche 924 1984, 2.0L inline 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engine, is the first ever Porsche to come with a fully automatic gearbox. The car was publically displayed in November 1975, and remained on the production line until 1988 with over 150,000 cars produced.

At first, it was a project shared by Volkswagen and Porsche but after the 1973 oil crisis, new regulations entered the European automotive business aimed at less fuel consumption. Porsche made a deal with Volkswagen to buy the car and assemble it in Porsche factories in Stuttgart, but the deal included that Volkswagen engineers would assemble under the supervision of Porsche specialists.
The car was first introduced with a four speed manual gearbox from Audi, and a four cylinder motor by VW with some internals designed by Porsche, producing 95hp, brought up later to 115hp with catalytic converter increasing the compression ratio in 1980.

Porsche later offered the Turbo version of the 924, pumping more horsepower to satisfy hungry Porsche enthusiasts to 175hp in European specs and 145hp for North America.
But the best was yet to come. Porsche decided to offer a more powerful, racing inspired 924, so it came up with the 924 Carrera GT and the Carrera GTS, offering a whopping 210hp and 245hp, plus the limited edition Club Sport version with factory fitted rollcage and racing seats which produced 280hp. Porsche also raced the 924 in Le Mans and various other rallies with a heavily modified version of the car going up to 400hp.

“The passion for cars was there since my childhood days,” Abdel-Wahab said. “I always loved cars, especially unique looking ones.”
But classic Porsches had the biggest effect on Abdel-Wahab who also loved the Porsche 911 SC. “The 924 was in my old neighbourhood since the 1980s. The first owner used to live a couple of blocks away. A very close friend of mine bought it three years ago from the family's owner after he passed away and then a few month later, the dream came true. Then the journey began.”
With only 43,000 miles on it, this car was worth the effort, really hard effort as Abdel-Wahab later explained. “Finding parts is always the challenging part, especially new OEM parts. So I had to spend some time contacting international parts providers and Porsche dealerships overseas. The Internet really helped but you need to know how and where to look.”

According to Abdel-Wahab, the restoration process was professionally done by the local Porsche dealership in Egypt. He collaborated with them on sourcing the needed parts and acquiring some from Germany through the Porsche local dealer. He sourced the rest from the US, UK and EU as Germany had many items such as NLA (no longer available).
The main challenge, Abdel-Wahab explained, was in finding the needed parts, starting with the cooling system which was fully replaced with new parts. “These cars tend to heat up often if not well taken care of especially in our hot summer.”
Abdel-Wahab added that many parts were replaced to restore it to its factory mint condition, although it was fairly maintained (no ridiculous modifications or aftermarket tuning). Suspension, brakes, windshield, cooling, full exhaust, manifold and much more were replaced.

The restoration period of this Porsche took six months according to the owner who strongly believes his car is the best looking and the most drivable 924 in town rather than just a show car. Said Abdel-Wahab: “I only know of one or two 924s in Egypt but both need lots of work.”
