Nice bomb
THE FRENCH city of Nice has launched an investigation after a homemade firebomb thrown from the crowd injured a fireman during Sunday's 2-1 win over Marseille.
The fireman lost two fingers when he tried to pick up the bomb, thrown by Marseille fans, and the match was suspended for five minutes.
Nice security boss Andre Boch said: "He thought it was a flare and picked it up but it exploded in his hands.
"We are looking at television footage to identify those who threw the bomb."
Marseille fans were detained for two hours after the match, while police sniffer dogs were used to search them.
The volunteer fireman was taken to a hospital that specialises in hand injuries.
Boch said he was determined to find the fans responsible but admitted the bombs were very hard to detect.
"In the past four years there have been strong measures to prevent people from bringing these bombs into the stadium," he added.
"But they are only five centimetres in diameter and therefore are very hard to detect."
Marseille chairman Pape Diouf condemned the incident, saying: "Defeat is part of the game but what I will remember from this evening is this image of violence, which I strongly condemn."
Mourinho incensed
CHELSEA boss Jose Mourinho said a fan who threw a plastic water bottle at Frank Lampard during Saturday's 2-0 win over Sheffield United should be jailed.
The incident happened late in the game as the England midfielder went to take a corner at the Blades' Kop end.
Mourinho told the Daily Mail: "If we can catch him and send him home or get him to spend a night in jail, that would be perfect. But it wouldn't be fair to punish the club or 30,000 fans."
Lampard attempted to play down the incident, saying: "It was only a plastic water bottle and there are no hard feelings for me.
"I know it's not something you want to see but if it had landed on me I might have felt different.
"There was quite good banter in the far corner and nothing nasty aimed at me."
Cry for help
KENYA football authorities say they want FIFA's help to restructure the country's Premier League in a bid to comply with the governing body's conditions for lifting a suspension.
FIFA banned the east African country from international competition last week for failing to respect signed agreements and for recurrent problems in their federation.
World football's ruling body said the suspension would remain in place until further agreements were fully implemented.
Kenya's most popular sport is in chaos with two rival organisations running parallel Premier Leagues.
FIFA wants Kenya Premier League Limited (KPL) to run a league featuring 18 clubs but the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) has set up a company, KFF PL, to run a 20-team league.
The solution is a merger of the two organisations and Kenyan officials want FIFA to help resolve any differences.
The KFF wants more executive power, including the right to appoint a chief executive and chairman plus 40 per cent control.
"The committee was unanimous on the KFF's commitment to fully comply as communicated (by FIFA)," chairman Alfred Sambu said after a KFF committee meeting on Friday.
"But in pursuit of the said compliance, some provisions of the memorandum and articles of KPL appeared to contradict the FIFA statutes.
"Under this apparent legal complexity, the committee resolved to forward the sets of documents to FIFA for perusal and guidance," he said.
Berbick murdered
POLICE in Jamaica are holding a man in connection with the killing of former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick.
Berbick, the last boxer to fight Muhammad Ali, was found in his native Norwich, north east of Kingston, with gaping head wounds.
Local police said a man had been arrested over the killing on Saturday in the Portland region of the island, but no-one had been charged.
Berbick beat Ali in 1981 and briefly held the WBC heavyweight title in 1986.
He was found by a church deacon at the Norwich Baptist Chapel near his home in Port Antonio, according to the Sunday Gleaner in Jamaica.
Senior Detective Sergeant Kenneth Bailey of the Port Antonio Criminal Investigation Branch, is quoted by the paper as saying: "He reportedly left one of the local night spots between the hours of 1.45 to 2am Saturday and headed for home.
"The body had four wounds to the back of the head, as he was probably attacked from behind. The impression and damage done to the skull have indicated that a machete may have been used by his attacker or attackers to murder him."
Police believe the attack was not a robbery because Berbick was found with cash and no attempt had been made to enter his house a few feet from where he was found.
Berbick was aged 51 or 52; his birthdate was disputed.
When asked once about his age, a detail that was never nailed down during his lifetime, Berbick said: "Legally, I'm a spirit. I have no age."
Last chance
ANDY Murray will hope to end his first full season on the ATP Tour in style at the Paris Masters this week. The 19-year-old Scot will play at the Paris Masters, having previously suggested he might skip the last event of the regular season due to tiredness.
Murray, seeded 13, has a bye in the first round and will face Paradorn Srichaphan or Juan Ignacio Chela in round two.
Roger Federer is the top seed and is looking for his 12th title of 2006.
And after winning in Basle on Sunday, the world number one said: "It's a great situation I'm in right now. It's so easy to stay motivated. I feel like every time I enter an event it's because I want to play."
Goal achieved
PADRAIG Harrington said he had achieved one of his main career ambitions in winning the Order of Merit.
"This has been a big goal of mine down the years," said the Irishman, who pipped Paul Casey to the European number one title at the Volvo Masters.
"Ten years ago I would have been happy to be a journeyman finishing 70-75th. I've come a long way. I'm very proud."
The 35-year-old added: "Hopefully I can keep going forward and maybe come back better and stronger and win it again."
In an exciting climax to the European season, it had looked as if Harrington would finish the Volvo Masters tied for third, which would not have been enough to claim the Order of Merit.
But Sergio Garcia's dropped shot at the final hole in Valderrama meant Harrington earned a share of second place and that propelled him above Casey in the rankings.
"I never lost patience. My caddie kept pushing me to stay focused," said Harrington, who edged out Casey by 23,616 in a season when both won over 1.6m.
"I should have been playing the Euro Lotto this week. Over the last six holes everything went for me."
First Aussie
NEIL Robertson became the first Australian to win a ranking snooker event with a 9-5 victory over Jamie Cope in the Grand Prix final in Aberdeen.
The Melbourne player dominated the early part of the match and led 8-2 at one stage.
But with victory in sight he started to struggle and Cope won the next three frames to give him a chance.
Robertson, however, regained his composure with a break of 55 to win the 14th frame and take the match.
"I was twitching all over the place at the end but this has been the best week of my life." said the 24-year-old left-hander, who will move up to seventh in the provisional world rankings.
"The win over Ronnie O'Sullivan in the quarter-finals gave me a lot of confidence for the rest of the week.
"Leading 8-2 I thought it was in the bag. I was feeling really, really good and all I wanted was one chance, but the balls just went a little bit funny and Jamie started to find his rhythm.
"But he started to miss a few balls, I did and it became a little bit contagious.
"If he had won the frame to make it 8-6 then anything could have happened, but I'm so relieved to have won it."
Warren King was the last Australian to reach a ranking event final, but he lost 10-6 to Steve James at the 1990 Classic final in Blackpool.
