New Judges Club head
JUDGE Mohamed Abdel-Mohsen was elected Friday as the new head of Egypt's prestigious Judges Club, snatching the seat from eight other contenders.
Abdel-Mohsen is deputy head of the Court of Cassation. He was running on a youth electoral list.
The Judges Club is an unofficial, powerful body that represents over 90 per cent of Egypt's judges.
A total of 84 judges were also competing for 16 posts on the club's high board.
The elections were decided after a court order in June ruled that the election by-laws of the club, put into place by sacked justice minister Ahmed Al-Zend, were void.

Results next week
THE EDUCATION minister announced on Monday that the results of final year exams for secondary students or Thanaweya Amma, are expected by the middle of next week.
In a press conference at the ministry's headquarters, Minister of Education Al-Hilali Al-Sherbini said that the ministry had not decided exactly when to release the results, instead adding that they were expecting the results next week.
“We called on the exams' graders and checkers to take the highest degree of caution and deliberation so students and parents would be reassured,” he said.
Al-Sherbini also announced the success rates of some of the subjects, with 95 per cent of students passing the Arabic language exam, 84.7 per cent passing English Level One and 98.3 per cent passing the Second Foreign Language French or German exams.
The minister added that 95.5 per cent of students passed the geography exam and 90.7 per cent passed philosophy, adding that 88.7 per cent were able to pass the psychology exam.
In sciences subjects, the minister noted that 87 per cent of students passed the biology exam while 80.3 per cent passed chemistry and 77.6 per cent physics.
In math-related subjects, 88.7 per cent of students passed the pure math exam and 90.6 per cent passed the applied math exam.
Several of the exams had to be retaken following a huge leak of exam results that rocked the country, leading to protests by students and parents demanding Al-Sherbini's resignation.

MP assault investigated
THE INTERIOR Ministry is investigating an MP's claim that she was assaulted by a police officer at a Cairo police station, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported on Friday.
The ministry has relieved the officer involved in the alleged assault from his duties while the investigation is being carried out, a security source told Al-Ahram.
Zeinab Salem said that she was physically assaulted by a police officer at Nasr City police station in Cairo on Thursday evening when she was visiting a family member.
Salem was accompanying her sister to see her nephew who had been arrested the same day after getting involved in an argument.
Salem told several media outlets that a police officer assaulted both her and her sister physically when she objected to how her nephew had been beaten during his detention.
According to news reports, the MP sent a message to an MP group on the WhatsApp messaging service asking for help. Several MPs arrived at the police station and found her on the floor in disarray and without her veil.
Salem, who is currently undersecretary of the parliamentary tourism committee, is a member of For Support of Egypt, the main parliamentary bloc which supports Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi.

80 Ultras arrested
EIGHTY members of Ahly football club's Ultras supporters were arrested on Sunday evening on charges of rioting at an African Champions League match between Ahly and Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca in Borg Al-Arab stadium in Alexandria, according to the daily Al-Ahram.
Police forces arrested the fans who had reportedly smashed stadium seats, destroyed two police cars, and threw stones at police officers, resulting in the injury of three policemen and five conscripts.
All those arrested were referred to Alexandria prosecution for an investigation into the charges of assaulting police officers, rioting and hooliganism.
A committee has been formed by stadium officials to compile an inventory of the damage caused by fans during the match.
Borg Al-Arab stadium officials demanded financial compensation of LE160,000 from Ahly for the damage caused to the stadium.
At the beginning of July, 17 Ahly Ultras were released on bail following an earlier clash with security forces outside Borg-Al Arab stadium.
The court ordered that 12 of the detainees pay bail of LE20,000 each, while the remaining five had to provide proof of residence in order to be released.
Charges included allegedly assaulting three police officers, three conscripts, and damaging a police car after the fans were banned from attending a match against Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas.
