A goal by Mohamed Salem in the eighth minute of the match on Saturday stunned visitors Uganda at Borg Al-Arab Stadium in Alexandria en route to a 4-0 demolition which makes Uganda's task in the return match of the final round exceptionally difficult, even if at home.
Mahmoud Kahraba doubled the young Pharaohs' lead with a stunning long-range strike on the 67th minute. Ramadan Sobhi scored the third on the 78th minute amid complete surrender by the stunned Ugandans.
Kahraba wrote the last line by adding his second goal and the fourth for Egypt on the 90th minute when he dribbled past the keeper and slotted home.
“I am very satisfied with the victory but I won't celebrate until the second leg match in a fortnight as the opponents are not an easy prey and they lost a number of good chances,” Hossam Al-Badri, Egypt's head coach, said after the match.
In other results according to cafonline.com, in Libreville, France-based striker Adama Niane's 77th minute effort was all Mali needed to beat the reigning champions Gabon. It was the fourth goal of the campaign for Niane who plays for FC Nantes.
Visiting 10-man Zambia held Cote d'Ivoire to a barren draw in Abidjan.
The winners at this stage will qualify for the final tournament of the African U-23 Championship scheduled for 28 November to 12 December in Senegal. The top three teams will represent Africa at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, with the fourth placed team facing an Asian side in a playoff.
