Whiffs of allure
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 25 - 02 - 2014

Perfumes are one of the most ignored accessories in a woman's vanity case. Not because we don't buy enough perfumes, but because we stick to a perfume regardless of whether it is night or day. We also tend to buy perfumes depending on what our friends recommend, even though fragrance develops differently as the natural body oils and scent varies from one person to another.
Just like clothes, different perfume types go for different occasions. With these tips, you'll be able to pick the perfect perfume for any occasion:
- For the outdoors or nighttime, heavier scents are more appropriate, while lighter scents are better suited for work or school.
- Stronger perfumes go for more formal occasions, while at work, where you go several days a week, you might want to wear something that's not very strong.
- More formal occasions go best with fragrances that are part of the Fougère family, while a day at the beach can be matched with a perfume that is part of the Marine family.
- While picking the right perfume is important, it is also essential that you apply your perfume correctly so that the scent lingers longer.
Follow these beauty experts' tips to make perfume last longer:
- Layer your scent by having a bath or shower using soap, shower gel or even shampoo with a fragrance that compliments the scent of your desired perfume.
- Fragrances need oil to cling to the skin, so if you have dry skin add a little baby oil to the areas you're going to spray to make perfume last longer on your skin.
- Spray the perfume at the pulse points, which include your wrists, behind your ears, at your cleavage, at the base of the throat, inside your elbows, and behind your knees. These are the areas that produce heat to enhance the longevity of the fragrance.
- Don't rub your wrists together after spraying them; this would compress the scent and flatten it. Instead use a light touch while applying, so that the perfume is never overwhelming.
- For an extra long-lasting scent, maintain a distance of five to six inches from your body, depending on how strong the scent is. Spray a little into the air and walk into it to diffuse the scent all over you.
- Apply perfume right after you shower. Your pores will be open and your skin will be warm, and ready to absorb the fragrance better.
- If you're wearing perfume, try not to use scented body lotions/ toners/moisturisers, as the end result will be confusing. Use unscented products instead.
- Keep perfume away from heat and direct sunlight and make sure the lid is on firmly to keep it at its best.
Ways of testing perfume:
- Always test the perfumes you try on yourself, preferably on your pulse points, because they can smell different according to your body's natural fragrance.
- You can also spray perfume on the fragrance blotters.
But remember that:
- By testing on your skin, you will be able to know exactly how it smells on your skin. The downside of skin testing is that you can't try out too many different types of perfumes because each subsequent fragrance after the first will confuse the scent.
- By testing on the fragrance blotters, you can spray on different cards and write the name of that fragrance at the back of those cards.
- Finally, the best way is to try on the fragrance blotters first, then choose the smell that you like and try it on your skin. By doing this, you can choose both the fragrance you like and the right perfume for your skin.
