A PART of the Al-Sheikh Mansour Bridge in nothern Cairo's Al-Marg district collapsed early on Tuesday. A fire broke out in shacks under the bridge and a number of gas cylinders exploded, dislodging a 100m stretch of the bridge. The collapsed section fell over the underground Metro's railway and blocked the Ezbet Al-Nakhl and New Al-Marg stations. Fighting the fire, a police corporal was killed; two other injuries have been reported. The Ministry of Interior reported that the bridge ignited after huts beneath it caught fire. “People were fighting with gas cylinders and one blew up, causing the fire,” said Ahmed Abdel-Hadi, spokesman for the Metro. Al-Ahram reported that several cylinders and an electric cable exploded. The Metro operating company decided to halt trains at four Metro stations after technicians warned that the bridge might fall onto the tracks. The company said trains through the first Metro line are moving normally. Cairo Governor Galal Al-Said said the families affected by the incident will be provided with residency units. A pedestrian bridge collapsed on 21 April, 2013 in Obour, Cairo-Ismailia road, killing four and injuring 12 others.
