Once again exceptionally talented artist Farahat Zaki impresses his audience with a thrilling exhibition of paintings entitled, "A Flower on the Face of the South", currently on show at Grant gallery. His entire oeuvre includes drawings in different approaches especifically in portrait that he masters as well as the still life using the pastel. His style is moving from the colourful impressionism to expressionism as in the art of portraiture. According to art critic and Head of the Egyptian Society of Art Critics Kamal Al-Gwali, "On watching Zaki's paintings with our eyes and feeling them with our senses, we recall as art appreciators all what we learned and knew about the artistic techniques and how to reach from the side of creation to the sensitivity of expression." He mastered painting with pastel and became brilliant in expressing his ideas through this material which is normally difficult to deal with. He follows the same path of his pastel master Ahmed Sabri, one of the pastel pioneers in Egypt who used to deal with this art medium with high sensitivity and trasparency. In most of his exhibitions including the current show, Zaki reflects his infatuation by the dark complexion that he depicts through his very own and creative vision. The dark complexion has always been a source of inspiration for him which he sees more rich and brighter in the light. Back to his excellence in using pastel that is a very special material in its characteristics that rebelled many artists from approaching it, however, Zaki is famous for making a very good use of the expressionistic power of this material. The exhibition runs until 23 February. Nagwa El-Ashri
