The 64th Berlinale screens films in many sections, with some having their own juries: the Berlinale Shorts, Generation, Out of the Competition, the Berlinale Special, Panorama, Forum, Perspektive Deutsches Kino, Retrospective, Homage, Culinary Cinema, Berlinale Goes Kiez and Native-A Journey into Indigenous Cinema. In the Berlinale Shorts there are six female directors from Egypt and 14 films from the Arab countries, including the Egyptian film, Oum Amira (Amira's Mother), directed by Nagi Ismail, the Danish 13-minute film Xenos directed by Palestinian filmmaker Mahdi Fleifel and the Palestinian-Israeli film Smile, and the World Will Smile Back, a documentary directed by Ehab Tarabeih and Yoav Gross. The Egyptian-US documentary Al-Midan (The Square), directed by Gihan Noujaime, is participating in the Forum section, while the German-Egyptian documentary Arij: Scent of a Revolution, directed by ViolaShafik, has its world premiere. The Shorts jury also includes the Lebanese critic Christine Tome.
Another seven short Arab films are participating: Mashrou' Al-Sheikh Imam (The Sheikh Imam Project) directed by Gheith Al-Amine, Mondial 2010 directed by Roy Dib, Al-Nogoum Tozakerni bel Tasanout (Shooting Stars Remind me of Eavesdroppers) directed by Maha Maamoun, From Behind the Momument, directed by visual artist Jasmina Metwaly(founder of the social media collective Mosireen), Waraa Al-Shams (Behind the Sun), directed by the Kuwaiti director Mounira Al-Qadir and Al-Awraq Tasqout fi Kol Al-Fosoul (Leaves Fall in All Seasons), directed by the Saudi director Ahmed Matar. The Forum is also screening the documentary Al-Qahira Al-Thabet wal Mota'wel (Cairo: The Stable and the Changeable), directed by Hanan Abdallah and Kersida Tory; it illustrates the life of four presidential candidates after the revolution. Also in the Forum was also the video art project Music for Drifting by the Egyptian artist Malak Helmy and Project Speak 2 Tweet: Case Study #1 by Heba Amin, Guerrilla 8-bit by Firas Shehadeh from Jordan.
In the official competition 20 films are participating from 12 countries: Jack directed by Edward Berger, Die geliebten Schwestern (The Beloved Sisters), directed by Dominik Graf, Kreuzweg (Stations of the Cross) directed by Dietrich Brüggemann, Zwischen Welten (Between Worlds), directed by Feo Aladag from Germany; Blind Massage directed by Lou Ye, No Man's Land directed by Ning Hao, Black Coal: Thin Ice directed by Diao Yinan from China; Aimer, boire et chanter (Life of Riley), directed by Alain Resnais, La voie de l'ennemi (Two Men in Town) directed by Rachid Bouchareb from France; The Grand Budapest Hotel directed by Wes Anderson, 71 directed by Yann Demange from the United Kingdom;f Historia del miedo (History of Fear), directed by Benjamin Naishtat, La tercera orilla (The Third Side of the River), directed by Celina Murga from Argentina; Boyhood directed by Richard Linklater from the US; Aloft directed by Claudia Llosa from Spain; Macondo directed by Sudabeh Mortezai from Austria; Stratos directed by Yannis Economides from Greece; The Little House directed by Yoji Yamada from Japan; and Praia do Futuro (The Future Beach), directed by Karim Aïnouz from Brazil.
