Egypt won the girls singles title and the bronze medal in the boys singles at the ITF/ CAT (International Tennis Federation and Confederation African Tennis) African Closed Junior 18 and Under Championships held in Potchefstroom, North West Province in South Africa, from 18-23 February. The championship is one of the most prestigious tennis competitions in Africa. It was divided into boys and girls (18 and under), singles and doubles events. Countries participating were Egypt, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Burundi, Botsawna, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, Tunisia, Mauritius, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Libya, and Lesotho. In girls singles, Egypt's Sandra Samir won a gold medal after defeating South Africa Lyn Kiro 6-4, 6-1. In the first round, Samir had a bye, an automatic advancement of a player to the next round of a tournament without facing an opponent. It is always given to the top-seeded players in a tournament. In the second round, Samir defeated South African Louise-Mare Botes 6-3, 6-4. In the third round, she beat Moroccan Rita Atika 6-4, 6-4. In the quarter-final, Samir defeated South African Janet Koch 6-1, 6-1. In the semi-final, Samir beat South African Ilze Hattingh 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. In girls doubles, South Africans Janet Koch and Jessica Simpson beat South Africans Lyn Kiro and Theresa Alison Van Zyl 6-3,6-4. In the semi-final, Koch and Simpson defeat South Africans Ilze Hattingh and Madrie Le Rouex 6-2, 6-4. Kiro and Van Zyl beat Hana Mortagi and Samir 6-4, 4-6 [10-7]. In the quarter-final, Mortagi and Samir beat Zimbabwian Nicole Dzenga and Thabile Tshatedi 6-3, 6-4. In boys singles, South African top-seeded Wayne Montgomery beat Egypt's top-seeded and No 2 Mazen Osama 6-7(7) 6-2 6-2. In the semi-final, Montgomery defeated Tunisian Skander Mansouri 6-2, 7-5 while Osama routed South African Joshua Luck 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. In the first round, Osama received a bye. In the second round, he defeated Mali's Seydou Diallo 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In the third round, Osama beat South African Francois Kellerman 6-1, 6-1. In quarter-final, Osama upended South African Matthew Rossouw 6-1, 6-2. In boys doubles, South Africans Montgomery and Matthew Rossouv beat South Africans Francois Kellerman and Okkie Kellerman 6-2, 7-5. In the semi-final, Montgomery and Rossouv defeated Congo's William Bushamuka and Kenya's Ismael Chanqawa Ruwa 6-2, 6-1. Francois and Okkie beat Omar Gamaleddin and Osama 0-6, 7-6 (4) [12-10].
