Libya timeline
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 18 - 12 - 2012

January: The United Nations voices concern over growing powers of rival Libyan militias. International human rights organisations, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, indicate that gross human rights violations and torture are prevalent in post-Muammar Gaddafi Libya.

February: Amnesty International warns that Libya's militiamen are beyond state control.

March: Libya officially demands that the Mauritanian authorities hand over Gaddafi's spy chief Abdallah Al-Senoussi. Intense fighting erupts between rival militias. Inter-tribal clashes in Sebha between dark-skinned and light-skinned Libyans claim the lives of scores of people.

April: Defence counsel of Seif Al-Islam Al-Gaddafi at the International Criminal Court in The Hague warns that the late Libyan leader's son is being mistreated in custody by his captors.

May: The body of Libya's former oil minister, Shukri Ghanem, is found floating in the Danube River in Austria. The chief suspect in the Lockerbie plane bombing, Abdel-Baset Al-Megrahi, dies in Tripoli after a long battle with cancer. Human Rights Watch urges NATO to investigate civilian deaths caused by NATO air strikes.

June: Tribal clashes break out in Kufra, the southern Libyan oasis town, between local non-Arab dark-skinned Toubou and lighter-skinned Arabs. Tunisian President Moncef Al-Marzouki declares that the extradition of Gaddafi's onetime Prime Minister Al-Mahmoudi Al-Baghdadi was “illegal” and that it occurred without his consent or prior knowledge.

July: Landmark Libyan parliamentary elections in which liberal and secularist forces dominate. Women win 33 seats of the 200-seat General National Congress, or parliament. Five oil terminals in Brega, Ras Lanouf and Sidra are closed for 48 hours to disrupt the elections.

August: Libya's Transitional National Council hands over power to the General National Congress. Fighting between rival militias erupts in Tripoli and Benghazi.

September: Mauritanian authorities hand over Abdallah Al-Senoussi to the Libyan authorities. On 11 September, a terrorist attack on the United States Consulate in Benghazi results in the death of American ambassador to Libya Christopher Stephens and three other embassy staff and security personnel.

October: Ali Zeidan is elected Libya's prime minister.

November: Benghazi security chief Faraj Al-Dursi is shot dead by unidentified assailants.
