16 Egyptians drowned during Sham El-Nessim celebrations 16 Egyptians died as millions across the country celebrated the national holiday of Sham El-Nessim on Monday.
Celebrations of Sham El-Nessim saw the drowning of 16 citizens who fell from boats nationwide, announced the health ministry on Tuesday. The tragic incidents took place in the governorates of Gharbia, Monoufia, Suez, Kafr El-Sheikh, Port Said, the Red Sea, Sharqiya, Sohag, South Sinai, Assiut and Aswan. According to the statement, another seven were saved from drowning. Millions of Egyptians recognised the national holiday of Sham El-Nessim on Monday by taking to the nile and the mediterraean and red seas on boats. Sham El-Nessim, Arabic for 'inhaling the breeze', is a celebration linked directly to ancient Egypt, and is celebrated by Egyptians of all religions.
