Egypt urges Syrian opposition to unite: FM spokesman Egypt urges Syrian opposition to unite, reach political settlement, says Egypt's foreign ministry spokesperson
Egypt's foreign ministry Spokesperson Badr Abdel-Ati said in a press statement on Thursday that Egypt is in contact with the Syrian opposition's various factions urging them to unify their stance, stressing that a political resolution is the way to go in Syria, not a military one. Abdel-Ati said Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy met with his Saudi Arabian counterpart Saud El-Faisal at the Arab Summit in Kuwait earlier in the week to discuss the issue. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are backing militants in an effort to overthrow the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. The civil war raging in Syria between Assad and rebel groups has claimed over 150,000 lives, mostly civilians. While Egypt's ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi had openly backed the rebels, and called for Egyptians to join the battle against Bashar, the current authorities in Egypt seem to be opposed to the former's invitation as Egypt faces its own armed insurgency mainly in Sinai. The Syrian opposition includes the Syrian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood which Egypt has declared a terrorist group in December. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/97702.aspx
