Talae El-Gaish striker Salah Amin's domestic league suspension has been shortened to just three games following a successful appeal to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), the association's website reported on Wednesday.
Amin had been banned for the rest of the domestic season and fined LE20,000 after making a political gesture – understood to be in support of Egypt's defence minister Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi – while celebrating a league goal against Ismaily last month.
But after appealing the sanction imposed by the EFA's competitions' committee, the 31-year-old Amin will now be suspended only three games, with his fines remaining intact.
Amin's club El-Gaish will still be required to pay the LE10,000 fine imposed by the EFA earlier this month.
The EFA's decision is understood to be in line with the association's effort to avoid mixing politics with sports during domestic league play in Egypt, already plagued with political instability since the January 2011 uprising.
At the centre of a similar controversy is Ahly's loaned-out striker Ahmed Abdel-Zaher, who flashed the pro-Muslim Brotherhood four-fingered 'Rabaa' sign during a Champions League home final in November last year.
The gesture caused Abdel-Zaher to be banned from the African champions' Club World Cup campaign and then loaned to Libya's Ahly Tripoli, as his chances of playing in Egypt seemed negligible.
