Egypt's human rights council calls for urgent meeting with Pres Mansour Terrorism is not a justification for abusing Egyptians' human rights, says the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR)
Egypt's state-run human rights organisation has called for an urgent meeting with interim President Adly Mansour to discuss the country's human rights conditions, which it says are deteriorating under the weight of the government's battle against "terrorism." A press statement issued on Wednesday by the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) said the organisation will present Mansour with information on the "negative phenomena" of rights abuses in Egypt, including illegal detention, prolonged detention without interrogation of defendants and the arbitrary arrest of hundreds of children. The statement added that while the NCHR "understands what the country faces from terrorism, it reaffirms that this terrorism should not be used as a justification for abusing the human rights of Egyptian citizens." "It is important to implement the law and to respect human rights at the same time," said the statement. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/97609.aspx
