Hala Shukrallah signs April 6 petition against protest law
The movement launched a petition to collect the signatures of political figures in objection to protest law in early March

April 6 Youth Movement met with recently elected president of the liberal Constitution Party, Hala Shukrallah, in their series of meetings with political party leadership to collect signatures in objection to the current protest law, announced the movement on Tuesday.
Shukrallah signed the petition demanding that the Egyptian government cancel the current protest law during her meeting with the movement's representatives on Monday.
Mohamed Kamal, a member of the movement's political bureau, stated on Tuesday that both the movement and the Constitution Party agreed that the current protest law should be cancelled and amended in a way that protects the rights of the protesters.
In statements to Al-Ahram's Arabic news website, Kamal also indicated that there would be continued periodic meetings between April 6 and the Constitution Party.
The political movement launched the campaign to collect signatures of different political figures and parties in objection to the protest law in early March, starting with the 50-member constitution drafting committee.
Already, leading member in the Egyptian Social Democractic Party and member of the drafting committee, Dr. Mohamed Ghonim signed the petition.
April 6 Youth movement founder Ahmed Maher and leading member Mohamed Adel were sentenced to three years in jail along with activist Ahmed Douma for organising unauthorised protest last November according to the protest law.
Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested in the past few months for illegal protesting with many also receiving jail sentences and hefty fines.
