Art Alert: Evening of waltzes at the Cairo Opera House
On Wednesday 26 February, pianist Elena Dzamashvili will perform a selection of well-known waltzes at the Cairo Opera's Small Hall
Published in Ahram Online on 22 - 02 - 2014

Georgian pianist Elena Dzamashvili will perform a selection of waltzes on Wednesday, including pieces by Brahms, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel and Chopin.
The evening's first half will include four Walzes Op. 39 by Johannes Brahms, Liszt/Schubert's Soirees de Vienne Valse Caprice, Liszt's Forgotten Waltz and Mephisto Waltzes, Debussy's La plus que lente, and Ravel's La Valse Poeme. The second half of the evening will include 14 waltzes by Chopin.
"I usually create a thematic line, sometimes choosing one specific composer, at other times performing sonatas. I thought it would be an interesting change to dedicated a complete evening to waltzes," Dzamashvili told Ahram Online.
She added that while she finds something engaging in each waltz, it is Ravel's La Valse Poeme that she probably enjoys performing the most. "It is a very challenging yet particularly interesting piece that carries a lot of musicality," she said.
Dzamashvili graduated from the Tbilisi Conservatory in Georgia, and then worked in the same conservatory as an accompanist. Between 1971 and 1990 Dzamashvili worked as a piano teacher and later as an assistant professor in the Chamber Music Department in the same conservatory, before moving to Egypt.
As a performer, Dzamashvili has given several concerts with the Georgian Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as many recitals as a soloist or accompanied by well-known guest musicians in Georgia and later in Egypt.
Currently Dzamashvili teaches at the Cairo Conservatory as well as at the Talents Development Centre operating under the Cairo Opera House. Several of her students have won international competitions and perform with renowned orchestras.
