A Cairo court on Saturday sentenced 13 people, including seven former security guards of Brotherhood figure Khairat El-Shater, to two years in prison for assault.
The thirteen were convicted of assaulting journalists at the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in Moqattam in March 2013 during an opposition protest that saw clashes between opponents and supporters of then-president Mohamed Morsi.
In April 2013, a bodyguard of El-Shater, the deputy supreme guide of the Brotherhood, was given a one year sentence for possessing an unlicensed firearm.
Morsi was ousted on 3 July amid mass protests against his one year rule. Since his ouster, thousands of Brotherhood members and loyalists have been arrested. Many face accusations of inciting violence against Brotherhood opponents.
Like most Muslim Brotherhood figures, El-Shater is currently in detention. He is facing a number of charges, including inciting murder.
