Poetry evening with Ahmed Haddad at El-Sawy Culturewheel at 7.30pm
Marking the 10th anniversary since he first took to the stage at the same venue with his poetry and musical evening 'Mantahas' (It did not end), young Egyptian poet Ahmed Haddad will hold his latest poetry and musical performance 'Sallemli.' Accompanying Haddad on stage will be vocalists Fatemah Adel and Dalia El-Gindy along with Islam Abdel-Aziz on oud, Youssef El-Sheriay on piano and Farid Gad on percussion. Music is composed by Sherif El-Wessimy, Yehia Ghanam, Mohamed Ezzat and Shady Moones. Read more here.

‘I Am Now Dead' play at the French Institute at 7pm
Theatre troupe ‘Al-Sa'aa' will be performing their award-winning play 'I Am Now Dead' at the French Institute in Mounira in Cairo on 2 February as part of this year's Jeunes Createurs (Creative Youth) festival, and on 12-13 February in downtown Cairo's Rawabet Theatre. The play is written and directed by Hani Afifi and co-written by Bassem Sharaf. 'I Am Now Dead' is the recipient of several awards, including best play, best director and best actor at the third edition of the Jeunes Createurs festival in 2005, and the Special Jury Prize at the National Festival for Egyptian theatre in 2006.

Cairo Opera House Quartet to perform at Opera's Small Hall at 8pm
The concert of the Cairo Opera House Quartet will include String Quartet No 14 in D minor D 810, 'Death and the Maiden,' which is considered to be Franz Schubert's (1797-1828) masterpiece. The ensemble will also perform Henry Purcell's (1659-1695) music for William Shakespeare's in A Midsummer Night's Dream, as well as Handel-Aslamazian's 'Passacaglia.' Read more details here.

‘The Barbarian Invasions' screening in Vent at 8.30pm
A 2003 Canadian-French production, directed by Denys Arcad, telling the story of a dying man in his final days reuniting with family, old friends, ex-lovers and his estranged son.

Sobhy Guirguis retrospective exhibition opens at ArtTalks
ArtTalks gallery launches a retrospective exhibition titled 'The Self and The Other' featuring over 60 of Sobhy Guirguis's paintings and sculptures. Spanning his 60-year art career, the exhibition marks the first anniversary of the artist's death. The exhibition runs until 25 February. Read more here

Screening of ‘Saleh Cafe' and ‘Virgin Morning' at Doum Cultural Foundation at 7.30pm
Directed by Amina Ezz Elarab and produced by Error Media Production, the film 'Virgin Morning' discusses positioning of a woman in a society dominated by men and amid societal challenges she needs to deal with and respond to. Doum will also be screening the director's short documentary on the revolution from the perspective of a downtown Cairo coffee shop.

Performance of Mawlana at the Cairo Opera House at 8pm
Mawlana performance is based on Ibrahim Eissa's novel with the same name. Released in 2012, Eissa's novel aims at exposing misuses of religion in politics, exploring the hidden world of sheikhs and their ties with security institutions, politicians as well as businessmen. The performance based on Eissa's novel is staged by the Egyptian Modern Dance Theatre. It will be repeated 5 February.

Wednesday 5 February
Stage adaptation of the best-selling novel 'Taxi' in Vent at 8pm
Based on a best-selling novel by Egyptian writer Khaled El-Khamissi, 'Taxi' is the first production of the bilingual theatre company The Thousand Tongues. In the show, the novel's third-person narrative of police corruption and economic woes is transferred to six actors, who perform skits and monologues in an installation-style that allows the audience to interact with the performers. Vent is a non-traditional culture space that functions as a pub and restaurant while also offering film screenings, live music and theatre. The performance will be repeated 9 February. Rasputin ballet at Gomhoreya Theatre at 8pm
Choreographed and directed by Hani Hassan, Rasputin ballet is based on five leading roles, with Hassan being the protagonist (Rasputin) in addition to small corps de ballet (group of dancers, backdrop for the soloists). Most of the dancers are from the Cairo Opera Ballet Company, with a few coming from the Ballet Academy. Read more bout Rasputin ballet by Hassan here.

The 1996 Egyptian film gives viewers a glimpse into the lives of microbus drivers and the characters around them. The film is written by Mostafa Zekry and directed by Osama Fawzy.

‘The Square' screening at Artellewa at 6pm
The Egyptian-American production took Egypt's first ever nomination for an Oscar. The Square, directed by Jehane Noujaim, is a documentary recounting the story of the revolution through the eyes of some activists who frequented Tahrir Square between the start of the January 2011 uprising and Mohamed Morsi's July 2013 overthrow.

Yehya Khalil concert at Damanhour Opera House at 8pm

'Nostalgic Dreams' exhibition by Georges Baghory at Al-Masar Gallery
Through his paintings, Baghory pays homage to a country in which he still believes, through celebrating its simple charms in a colourful, nostalgic exploration. He also glorifies its people, the ordinary individuals, from bread sellers to puppet makers, who he views as Egypt's "real heroes."

All hip hop event at Bibliotheca Alexandrina at 6pm
Egyptian musicians will be joined by peers from the Bronx, New York City, in an event dedicated to hip hop music that will last for over three hours. The bands performing will be Revolution Records, Y-Crew and Shahin, Ali Talibab, Asfalt and Zap Tharwat, Sony Rahala and Ameer Yousef, along with YC the Cynic from New York.

Meeting Points 7 Exhibition opening at CIC at 7pm
The Contemporary Image Collective is set to host the 7th edition of Meeting Points, entitled 'Ten Thousand Wiles and a Hundred Thousand Tricks,' which is a series of exhibitions taking place successively between September 2013 and June 2014 in Zagreb, Antwerp, Cairo, Hong Kong, Beirut, Vienna and Moscow. The exhibition in Cairo features a number of women artists whose works tackle a wide range of social themes examined from specific geopolitical, critical and gender perspectives. As in the previous cities, the exhibition delves into questions of national, ethnic or racial representation taking a gendered perspective as a tool that cuts through these concerns. The exhibition features works by Iman Issa, Sanja Iveković, Maryam Jafri, Rajkamal Kahlon, Kayfa ta and Haytham El-Wardany, Jumana Manna, Cecilia Vicuña, Basma Al-Sharif, Rosalind Nashashibi. During the exhibition there will be weekly screenings of films by Kianoush Ayari, Simone Fattal, Edgar Morin and Jean Rouch, and Marta Popivoda.
The exhibition is open Saturday to Wednesday, 12-9 pm
