Art Alert: Screening of Crop at Doum Cultural Foundation: TRAILER
Crop, a documentary tackling the role of censorship and the manipulation of images in political journalism, will be screened at Doum Cultural Foundation on Tuesday 28 January
Published in Ahram Online on 26 - 01 - 2014

Directed by filmmaker Marouan Omara and German video artist Johanna Domke, Crop is a documentary filmed entirely at Al-Ahram institution, tackling the role of censorship and the manipulation of photographic images in the formation of collective consciousness.
The 49-minute documentary, which will be screened on Tuesday 28 January at Doum Cultural Foundation, explores the use of images during the January 25 revolution, simultaneously capitalising on how each of Egypt's presidents used the media to shape the public's perception of them, from Gamal Abdel-Nasser through Anwar Sadat to Hosni Mubarak.
The film also tackles censorship through showcasing the kinds of pictures that Al-Ahram's editors and photojournalists were not allowed to include. It also highlights how that selectivity was significantly challenged when people took to the streets in 2011 and citizen journalism started emerging and playing its part in formulating public opinion.
The film was part of the official selection of the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2013.
