Dozens of Egypt's Islamists handed 3 years in jail for illegal protests Cairo misdemeanour court sends dozens of Morsi supporters to three years in jail and fines each LE50,000 for illegally protesting and rioting
Dozens of supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi were sentenced on Thursday to three years in jail and an LE50,000 fine each on charges of destroying public and private property as well as breaching the newly passed protest law, judicial sources said. A Cairo misdemeanour court convicted 63 pro-Morsi protesters of assaulting the police, blocking roads, rioting and illegally protesting, while another Cairo court handed 24 other Morsi loyalists the same sentence for similar charges in a separate incident. Since Morsi's ouster in July, his supporters have been staging near-daily protests demanding his reinstatement, which have often descended into bloody clashes with security forces or opponents. The confrontation escalated to a new level with the issuance of a law regulating protests and allowing gatherings only with prior three-day permission. As a result of the ongoing crackdown by interim authorities on the Muslim Brotherhood, Islamists' protests have decreased in numbers and thousands of them have been detained on charges of rioting, inciting violence and, recently, belonging to the Brotherhood, designated a terrorist group in December. Morsi himself and the Brotherhood's top echelons are facing trials on different charges including incitement to murder and complicity with foreign groups against Egypt. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/91191.aspx
