Building collapse in Alexandria kills one Elderly woman dies when apartment building with pending demolition order collapses in Mediterranean city of Alexandria
At least one person died when a building collapsed in Alexandria on Sunday, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported. Mohamed Nasser, a civil defence official, said the ramshackle building in the western Attarien district had been issued with a demolition order that was not enforced. Residents, alerted by a partial collapse, evacuated the building shortly before it fell down, except for the slain woman. The rescue team was looking for possible survivors under the rubble, Nasser said. Building collapses in Egypt are often attributed to decaying infrastructure, local authorities' failure to carry out demolition orders, and unlicensed extensions of additional floors. The coastal city of Alexandria has seen a number of major building collapses in recent years. Similar incidents left one dead in the city in May and another in February. In January, a building collapsed in El-Maamoura district killing 28 and injuring at least 11. In 2008, at least 11 were killed in Alexandria after a four-storey building collapsed at night while residents were sleeping. A similar collapse in July 2012 killed at least nine people, and in October that year, a further four were killed http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/87393.aspx
