A policeman was shot dead in the early hours of Saturday by unknown assailants in the city of Al-Arish in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula. Mohamed Zayed, 40, was shot in the head and the foot on his way home from work at Al-Arish Second police station. Sinai has seen a spike in militant insurgency since the military ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July following massive protests against his rule. On Thursday, militants killed a junior police officer and stole his weapon while he was on guard in Al-Arish. On the same day, in another area of the city, a low-ranking police officer was shot and killed in front of his home, and militants and security forces exchanged fire in the southern El-Masaeed area. Attacks on security and army targets in the Sinai region have killed over 100 security personnel since July. Dozens of militants have been killed since the army began its recent campaign to flush out "terrorists" and seize or destroy arms caches in the Sinai region. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/86584.aspx
