Egypt prosecutor general initiates investigation into violence of past 2 days Prosecution says investigators have visited scenes of 6 October violence, which left 53 dead across Egypt
Egypt's Prosecutor General Hesham Barakat ordered on Monday comprehensive investigations into the violence that erupted in Cairo and outside the capital on Sunday. Barakat also ordered investigations into Monday's attacks in Cairo, Ismailia, and southern Sinai. General prosecution spokesman Ahmed El-Rakib said the prosecution received notification of "terrorist, violent, murderous, and thuggish acts" taking place on Sunday in Cairo during marches in support of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. El-Rakib said investigators have visited the crime scenes and examined the bodies of those killed during Sunday's confrontations. Deadly clashes erupted in Cairo on Sunday as pro-Morsi marches protesting the military headed to Tahrir Square, where thousands were celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1973 war with Israel. Confrontations also occurred outside the capital, with the death toll rising to 53 by Sunday night. On Monday morning, six Egyptian army personnel – one officer and five soldiers – were killed in an attack by gunmen on an army patrol near the Suez Canal city of Ismailia, security officials said. Shortly afterwards in the southern Sinai town of Al-Tor, two were killed and 48 injured in a massive car bomb explosion targeting security headquarters.
