Egypt's interior ministry warns against 'spoiling' Armed Forces Day celebrations
Published in Ahram Online on 05 - 10 - 2013

With fears of potential violence Sunday on the rise, Egypt's interior ministry says it will respond decisively to any breaking of the law or violence by Muslim Brotherhood supporters
Egypt's interior ministry issued a statement Saturday warning against any attempt to spoil celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the 6 October War against Israel, due to take place Sunday.
The ministry further affirmed that it will decisively respond to "any forms of breaking the law or violence by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood during their marches."
Security forces have been widely deployed in key areas and around vital institutions, in addition to around police buildings, added the statement.
Four were killed Friday in clashes between supporters and opponents of deposed president Mohamed Morsi.
Morsi supporters staged demonstrations in Cairo and across the country as part of a plan to stage continuous rallies in the lead up to Sunday, a national holiday celebrating the victory of the 1973 war against Israel.
Spokesman of the liberal Constitution Party Khaled Dawoud was reportedly attacked by pro-Morsi protesters Friday in downtown Cairo. Dawoud said he was stabbed in the chest and hands in addition to being beaten.
Fears of potential violence Sunday are on the rise as both Morsi loyalists and opponents plan rallies, with both camps eyeing Tahrir Square as a destination.
A military source told the state-owned MENA news agency late Friday that Tahrir Square, and Ittihadiya in the Heliopolis district, would be closed "for the celebrations planned in public squares on the 6 October War anniversary [on Sunday]."
