Art Alert: Collage exhibition at Darb 1718
An exhibition of collage artwork created during a workshop in June is on display at Darb 1718 until 7 August
Published in Ahram Online on 01 - 08 - 2013

Currently exhibited at Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Centre in Cairo is the outcome of a collage workshop led by prominent visual artist Hany Rashed.
Held between 10 and 20 June, the collage workshop at Darb 1718 led nine participants through the experimental technique of combining collage with painting.
Curated by Myriam Makhoul, the exhibition features artwork created during the workshop by the nine participating artists; Moataz Nasreldin, Iman Youssef, Yomna Akram Khattab, Mohamed El-Maghraby, Azza Eissa, Hend Samir, Ahmed Mongey, Hadeer Samir, Adam El-Gabri, and workshop leader Hany Rashed.
This was Hany Rashed's second collage workshop held at Darb 1718. The first was held in the summer of 2011.
As an art form, collage first appeared in the work of iconic artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Collage also emerged in the works of Egyptian painters over the years, including distinguished artists Huda Lutfi, Hisham El-Zeiny and Mounir Canaan, among others.
Hany Rashed was mentored by prominent painter Mohamed Abla. Rashed's artwork mostly tackles pop culture and is often tinged with a sense of humour. From abstract art to monoprints, Rashed's work is bold and experimental. He is one of the most famed artists of his generation. He has exhibited his work in major cities across the world, including Dubai, London and Berlin.
Programme:
The exhibition runs until 7 August
Kasr El-Shamee' Street, El-Fakhareen, Old Cairo
(Behind the Hanging Church and Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque)
