Real Madrid has signed goalkeeper Diego Lopez from Sevilla to help fill in for the injured Iker Casillas. Madrid said Lopez's contract runs through the 2016-17 season. Madrid also said that Casillas was released from hospital Saturday after surgery on his left hand, which he broke during a match Wednesday. He is expected to be sidelined for two-to-three months. The 31-year-old Lopez, who will compete with Adan Garrido for the starting spot, came up through Madrid's youth system and appeared sparingly for its first team before playing for Villarreal from 2007-12. He had joined Sevilla last offseason. Madrid coach Jose Mourinho turned 50 Saturday.
