Ahram Online picks top 10 Egyptian music videos of 2012 The arts and culture team of Ahram Online sets a top-ten list for music videos produced by independent artists in 2012
In an attempt to support the constantly growing, and innovating, independent music scene in Egypt, Ahram Online's arts and culture team brings forward their top ten list for music videos by independent Egyptian artists. The videos were selected on the basis of: creativity, spontaneity, photography and innovation. 1. City Band: Ana Mawgood One of the most innovative videos this year, the stop motion production, is directed by Ali Khaled with photography by Sima. 2. NEOBYRD: My Sweet Heartless The electro-musician took Egypt by storm this year, and it was no surprise that his video was as innovative as his approach to music making. The video is prodcued by the Cairo Jazz Club Agency. 3. Youssra El-Hawary: El-Soor A beautifully made video, shot at the backdrop of the Egyptian army's walls that were built around downtown Cairo, giving the song's words a whole new meaning. The video was shot by director of photography Sara Yehia, and clearly states at the end that it has no director as "not everything needs a director". 4. The Percussion Show: Body Percussion The video uses an old space in downtown Cairo with new colourful items, along with the coreography of the band to really simulate the fusion of beats the percussion show presents in this video directed by Mohamed Shaker, the same director behind the revolution song 'Sout El-Horeya'. 5. Like Jelly: Noor El-Shams Part of the Alexandrian Oufuky Music Festival documentation project, Like Jelly's humor mixed with the directors' vision of the song and the editing of Egyptian films at the end makes this stand out. Mamoon Azmy directs the video along with filming with Sherif El-Sharkawy. 6. Tamer Abu-Ghazala: Khabar 'Agel Abu Ghazala's strong lyrics, mixed with a series of footage from a news-studio and people's homes collide together to bring number 6 on our list, directed by musician Maii Waleed. 7. Maii Waleed: Moga The director of Abu-Ghazala's song releases a video for her own song Moga in this simple black and white video. 8. Maryam and Zeid Hemdan: Valérie Giscard D'Estaing A video shot spontaneously in Paris where Maryam and Zeid were performing their collaborative Arabic triphop project. 9. Yasser El-Manawahly : Sandook El-Naqd El-Menawhly featuring the choir of El-Warsha led by Hassan El-Gereitly takes a satirical appraoch to the International Monetary Fund loan the Egyptian government wants to take. The video is directed by Nesma Zaazou'. 10. Hany Adel: Dawwar Benafsak The video, produced by Axeer Studio, while it is not the most creative idea of a 30 year old gone traveling, features a set of beautiful imagery and photography from all around Egypt. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/61476.aspx
