Art Alert: PhotoCairo 5 to be launched in multiple Cairo venues
Arts event PhotoCairo 5 will feature exhibitions, two screening programmes and a mentorship programme of young artists, opening on 14 November
Published in Ahram Online on 11 - 11 - 2012

One of Cairo's most anticipated contemporary arts events is back for a fifth year, with events at multiple different venues around Cairo.
Opening on Wednesday 14 November and running until 17 December, 'PhotoCairo 5: More out of curiosity than conviction', will be hosted in seven different venues, mainly centred around Downtown Cairo, bringing forward a diverse line-up of exhibitions, a symposium, two screening programmes, a mentorship programme and a publication.
Curated by Contemporary Image Collective director Mia Jankowicz, the project is focused on a contemporary art exhibition which explores the ability of art to discuss and provoke the movement of people.
The exhibition presents several works, not under a specific theme, that explore political and personal paradigm shifts. The art works presented are by artists from Egypt and abroad, including Mohamed Abdelkarim, David Degner, Ahmed El-Ghoneimy, Samir El-Kordy, Saskia Holmkvist, Iman Issa, Hassan Khan, Basim Magdy, Elizabeth Price, André Romão, Ben Russell, and Hanaa Safwat.
Following a process of peer mentoring of young artists by Doa Aly, works by Sarah Samy, Noura Seif, Mahmoud Tarek and Sama Waly, specifically created for PhotoCairo 5, will be exhibited as well.
In addition to the opening, a symposium will be hosted on Saturday, 17 November at the Goethe Institute in Cairo addressing key points of the project.
The project also features two screening programmes, one of Harun Farocki films in the newly-opened Beirut Art Space, and one curated by Tamer El Said entitled 'The Edge of the Image #0' in Cimatheque.
