The UK has confirmed it is still committed to extraditing founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange to Sweden despite Ecuador's decision to grant him political asylum. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it has a legal obligation to hand Assange over to the Sweden government. Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London last June. He is wanted by the Swedish judicial authorities with regard to rape allegations. Assange, an Australian citizen, denies the charges, claiming they are “politically motivated.” If extradited to Sweden, Assange and his lawyer strongly suspect he would then be extradited to the United States where he would be tried on charges of endangering America's national security. Wikileaks released classified US information and US diplomatic cables revealing US governmental assessments on a range of issues and figures internationally. The British foreign office confirmed in a statement that it remains "committed to a negotiated solution that allows us to carry out our obligations under the Extradition Act."
