Swiss artist to address Egypt's new president at Cairo Atelier Jean-Luc Marchina's multimedia project – entitled 'Dear Mr. President' – will run from Sunday, 29 July, to Friday, 3 August, at the Cairo Atelier art gallery
With the support of Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, Swiss artist Jean-Luc Marchina has created a video installation at the Cairo Atelier art gallery, through which he addresses Egypt's first-ever freely-elected president Mohamed Morsi. The piece represents an open letter to the president that includes interviews with average Egyptian men and women, in which they air their thoughts about Egypt's recent landmark elections and the country's political future. "During my last stay in Cairo in 2007, I made short films about people working and living in the streets," Marchina explains. "This year, after Egypt has undergone several regionally influential events, I have continued my artistic work on the important topic of Egyptian youth who represent almost one quarter of the entire national population." Marchina will also present his 'Mobile Art School,' a project that came as a result of the visual-arts workshops designed for under-privileged children that he conducted in the Egyptian communities of Albania and Kosovo. Programme: Marchina's installation will be shown starting Sunday, 29 July, at 9pm. It will run until 3 August.
