Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, Arab Israelis join nationwide strike: Reports
Published in Ahram Online on 18 - 05 - 2021

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have joined a nationwide strike on Tuesday that came in response to Israel's aerial campaign on Gaza Strip and crackdown on Jerusalem and the West Bank, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.

According to the same report, the strike was joined by workers across the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

Similar reporting about this major event has been made by Israeli media.

"This is the first time we're seeing almost everyone participate in the strike. We've tried it before, but we've never seen this result," said Castro Othman, a resident of Tamra in northern Israel, told The Times of Israel.

Arab Israelis also participated in the strike, the Israeli news website mentioned.

The Palestinians started an economic, commercial and educational strike on Tuesday in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Gaza in response to Israel's escalatory measures.

Palestinian villages and towns in Israel closed their doors as part of the strike

Since the beginning of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, Israel has put barriers outside Damascus Gate to prevent the Palestinians from breaking the fast on the steps of the area where thousands of them traditionally gather after the night-time prayers. But it removed them at a later stage.

Israel also plans to evict several Palestinians families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighoburhood in east Jerusalem and regularly attacks Palestinians civilians, which Israeli settlers are involved in.

These developments led to a huge wave of Palestinians protests in the West Bank and Jerusalem, which faced a bloody Israeli crackdown.

Israeli also launched an aggressive aerial campaign on Gaza.

The Israeli wave of violence - in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza - has resulted in the injury and arrest of hundreds and death of tens of Palestinian people, and the numbers will seemingly increase in the coming days.
