Egypt's Sisi, Greece's PM discuss eastern Mediterranean cooperation
Published in Ahram Online on 04 - 03 - 2021

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed in a phone call with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday evening a number of regional issues of mutual interest, including energy and eastern Mediterranean cooperation fields.
According to a statement released by Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady, El-Sisi underscored the “distinctly strong” ties between Egypt and Greece and the “consistency” of mutual interests and stances between both nations at the regional level.
President El-Sisi expressed his hope to boost cooperation with Greece, particularly in economic, energy, security, and military fronts.
The Greek PM reiterated his keenness on exchanging points of view with the Egyptian President in regard to regional issues of concern, according to the statement.
He stressed the significance of mutual coordination in the energy and eastern Mediterranean domains in a way that contributes to achieving both countries' interests, whether at the bilateral level or within the framework of the trilateral cooperation mechanism with Cyprus.
Both eastern Mediterranean countries see eye to eye on a number of regional issues, including the situation in Libya.
Egypt and Greece signed in August a maritime demarcation deal establishing an exclusive economic zone between the two, which “permits Egypt and Greece to go ahead with maximising benefits from riches available in the exclusive economic zones of both countries, particularly promising gas and oil reserves,” according to Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
