EGYPT'S track and field star Bassant Hemeida has won the sprint double -- the 100 and 200 metres -- at the Athletics Kladno meet in the Czech Republic. Hemeida won the 100m in 11.23, an improvement of eight hundredths of a second over her previous national record, and the second best African performance in 2020 behind Zambia's Rhodah Njobvu (11.21 in Lusaka in March). She also dominated the 200m in 22.91, the first sub-23 by an African athlete this season. Hemeida had run 22.83 on 29 August in Morocco. The 24-year-old holds Egypt's national records in the 100m and 200m and also won the 200m silver and the 100m bronze medal at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco. *A version of this article appears in print in the 24 September, 2020 edition of Al-Ahram Weekly
