Russia said it has appointed a new ambassador to Egypt, less than a year after its previous envoy passed away suddenly in Cairo. According to Russian News Agency TASS, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree appointing Georgy Borisenko, director of the North America Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, as his country's new ambassador to Egypt. Borisenko was also appointed Russia's envoy to the Arab League in Cairo, according to the decree. His appointment comes months after the sudden death of Russia's ambassador to Egypt Sergei Kirpichenko at the age of 68 in a Cairo hospital in September 2019. The cause of Kirpichenko's death, who served as envoy to Cairo from 2011 to 2019, was not revealed at the time. Shortly after Kirpichenko's death, Svetana Zubova was appointed Russia's charge d'affaires ad interim in Egypt.
