The Egyptian health ministry on Tuesday reported 157 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 3,490. The overall death toll now stands at 264, with 14 new fatalities recorded on Tuesday, according to the ministry. Forty-nine Egyptians have recovered and were released from quarantine hospitals, which brings the total number of recoveries to 870. The number of patients who have re-tested negative, including recoveries, has reached 1,181, health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said. The new cases, all Egyptians, were detected through the ministry's investigation and contact tracing protocols, Megahed added. Egypt reported its highest daily increase to date in coronavirus cases on Monday, which saw 189 new infections confirmed. Egypt has adopted a set of strict measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus, including suspending schools and universities, closing all houses of worship, in addition to halting air traffic. A nationwide curfew is also in effect daily from 8pm to 6am.
