An Egyptian criminal court handed death sentences to four people over the 2016 killing of three policemen during a robbery attempt in Nile Delta's Sharqiya governorate. The criminal court issued the sentences after referring a previous preliminary death sentence to the grand mufti; a necessary, albeit non-binding, procedure before issuing a death sentence, according to Egyptian law. Those convicted were found guilty of killing three policemen in Sharqiya's Minya Al-Kamh city on their commute back home as they attempted to rob them at gunpoint. The sentences can be appealed.
