Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry began on Tuesday a trip to Washington by meeting US Senate Foreign Relations Representative Jeff Merkley, a brief statement by Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez said. "Foreign Minister #Sameh_Shoukry begins his current visit to Washington by conducting meetings in Congress ... Now meeting Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, Co-Chair of the Egypt Caucus and House member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations @JeffFortenberry," Hafez tweeted. Shoukry also met with chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Middle East, North Africa & Int'l Terrorism Ted Deutch. Shoukry is also expected to meet with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, where they are expected to discuss a number of issues of mutual concern to both countries. Pompeo's last visit to Egypt was in January when he embarked on an eight-country tour focusing issues related to Syria, Iran and Yemen.
