Prosecution detains second driver involved in deadly Cairo train crash

A Cairo prosecution ordered on Thursday the 24-hour detention of the second train driver involved in the deadly crash at Ramses Railway Station in Cairo on Wednesday where at least 22 people were killed.

The driver, who is being detained pending investigations, has denied responsibility for the accident.

According to the prosecutor-general, a locomotive was on its way to a train yard when it was struck by another locomotive on an adjacent train line.

The driver of the first locomotive left it unattended without turning off its engine to speak with the other driver, who was already working on disengaging his train from the other locomotive.

When the two locomotives disengaged, the now-unmanned locomotive moved at maximum speed towards the railway station until it collided with a concrete barrier at the end of the train line and burst into flames.

Egypt's Ministry of Health has said that the death toll from the crash reached 22 after two of the injured died in hospital on Thursday.

At least 22 people were killed and 41 others were injured when a blaze broke out in Cairo's Ramses Railway Station early Wednesday following the crash.
