Zambia eye last-four berth at Nations Cup Zambian Football Association President Kalusha Bwalya is optimistic about country's chances in upcoming African Cup of Nations
Zambian football legend Kalusha Bwalya, who is also the country's football association president, said the target of the Chipolopolo at this month's African Cup of Nations would be to at least reach the semis. Zambia will play in Group A with co-hosts Equatorial Guinea, Libya and Senegal at the 21 January-12 February tournament. “The target is to make it beyond the quarterfinals. We are not going to Gabon for a holiday but to make our country proud,” Bwalya told CAF Online on Tuesday. Orlando Pirates' Zambian midfielder Isaac Chansa echoed this sentiment, saying that the team had notably improved since the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola. Zambia were eliminated at the quarter-final stage two years ago following a 5-4 penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Nigeria. “There has been a tremendous improvement in the team compared to the one we had in Angola,'' Chansa said. “Our players are more experienced and we're more exposed to international football. That improvement must be reflected on the playing field.” “The last time Zambia won a medal at the Africa Cup of Nations was in Johannesburg in 1996 when we beat Ghana 1-0 in a third place play-off,” he added. “We want to honour the team that perished in Gabon by doing well in this tournament.” (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter: @AO_Sports)
