Egypt's telecoms authority has announced a US$2.4 billion plan to provide countrywide broadband starting mid-next year. The plan, dubbed eMisr, will start in the second quarter of 2012, according to a recent statement from the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NRTA). It will require $2.4 billion in public and private investment over the three years until 2015, the government body added. eMisr aims to provide 22 per cent of Egyptian household with broadband by 2015, and 40 per cent by 2021. Mobile broadband users are expected to reach 10 and 14 per cent of the population, respectively, by the same dates.
