Recently fired Inter Milan coach Stefano Pioli has been appointed to take over at Fiorentina. The two-time Serie A champions made the announcement Tuesday, saying Pioli has signed a two-year contract with an option for a third season. Pioli will replace Paulo Sousa, whose contract was not renewed. The 51-year-old Pioli played for Fiorentina from 1989-95 and was captain of the Viola. Pioli was fired by Inter early last month after only six months in charge. He has also coached Parma, Chievo Verona, Palermo, Bologna and Lazio. Fiorentina finished eighth when Serie A ended last month, missing out on a spot in Europe and disappointing fans after fourth- or fifth-place finishes each of the previous four seasons.
