FIFA rejects England's second poppy request FIFA has rejected a second request by the Football Association for England's players to wear a symbol on their shirts to mark Remembrance Day when they play Spain in a friendly match on Saturday
World football's governing body says it cannot accept the initiative to wear the poppy emblem, which honors those who lost their lives in service since World War I, because of rules prohibiting political gestures. FIFA issued what it described as a final statement on the matter, claiming it would “open the door to similar initiatives from all over the world, jeopardizing the neutrality of football.” FIFA said Tuesday the FA had a series of options at its disposal to mark Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, including a “Period of Silence.”
