Bibliotheca Alexandrina will screen two films by Egyptian director Nadine Salib on 15 January, followed by a discussion with the director. The first film to be screened is the director's debut, a seven-minute short documentary titled Dawn, produced in 2011. The short film follows the director's personal experience as a woman in Egypt, using a "special cinematic language," according to Bibliotheca's description, that “surpasses a narrow shade of femininity" to approach "the wider humane experience.” Dawn will be followed by the feature length documentary Um Ghayeb (Mother of the Unborn, 2014). Um Ghayeb tells the poignant story of an infertile woman yearning to have a child, living on the fringes of her community and reflecting on her mortality. The film was produced by Hassala Films in Cairo, with the support of four Arab and European cinema grants. Um Ghayeb competed at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in 2014 where it won the FIPRESCI for best documentary. It also won the Peter Wintonick Special Jury Award for First Appearance at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, and was screened at Cairo's Zawya cinema in 2015. Both films will be subtitled in English.
