Kidnapped doctor reappears after syndicate elections
Dr Ahmed Atef, head of the Coalition of Egyptian Doctors and coordinator of strikes, reappeared after syndicate elections with a story of kidnap and interrogations
Published in Ahram Online on 17 - 10 - 2011

The Egyptian doctor who has been missing for six days has reappeared and accused an “unknown security force,” of kidnapping him.
The doctor, Ahmed Atef, who is the head of the Coalition of Egyptian Doctors and coordinator of the coalition's general strikes, claims he was kidnapped Tuesday and held for almost a week before being released.
Atef recounts that he was kidnapped while on his way to buy a sandwich from a restaurant adjacent to the Nile Health Insurance Hospital where he works.
Atef was then approached by a father who told him that his daughter's hand had been cut off and needed a doctor's emergency medical aid. Atef rose to the call and went with the unidentified man who indicated he should get onto a microbus.
When the doctor approached the bus he found two men who told him that they have the injured girl and showed him a blood-soaked towel. As soon as he got on the bus, the men held him up at gunpoint and told him to remain quiet or, they threatened, they will hurt him.
They then blindfolded him and travelled for three hours to an unidentified location. The kidnapper who had initially approached the doctor with the false claim of his daughter's medical emergency then began interrogating Atef about the doctors' strike and continued to threaten him.
The group detained him for six days in a small cell until one day he woke up and found himself in the desert in the Mokattam district of Cairo with his bag next to him. Atef say that the contents of the bag were not touched and his mobile phone was also there. He then called his mother immediately to assure her that he is fine.
Since Atef's disappearance last week rumours swirled around about his whereabouts, especially after he failed to appear in the doctor's syndicate elections. His family has sent a complaint to the prosecutor-general to demand a swift investigation but were not able to get any answers.
