'Images, Politics, and Networks' exhibition at Darb 1718
Works by 13 artists from Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua examine the axis of power of modern communications and its impact on the socio-political arena
Published in Ahram Online on 06 - 10 - 2011

The idea for this exhibition originated after a conversation about the Egyptian Revolution, how young emerging artists are connected with society by social networks, and how they generate movements that can take back control and give a power to the people.
Works by artists from Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua look into the concept of networks versus politics and how art responds to this new phenomenon.
From revealing election-fraud to reducing the power of dictators; from breaking through conventional systems to moving societies to join ventures; from flash mobs to revolutions, social networks now are one of the most convincing and powerful instruments for communication in this era. Networks are more than just a way of life, or a device that gives you an identity. Their political value is being amplified by their low cost, high speed and ability to respond rapidly to any situation.
The exhibition investigates the axis of power of this communications phenomenon and asks if the art and culture field can sufficiently respond to its speed, using it to its advantage to create change.
